Common heart disease

There are various states of the heart, collectively referred to as the state of the heart.

It is always best to discuss your heart condition with your doctor or heart specialist. Heart specialists can advise on the correct diagnosis and labeling of your condition and treatment plan.

Heart disease and various medical conditions affect the heart's ability to function efficiently.

Being diagnosed with heart disease can be anxious and confusing, but there is plenty of information and support available. Understanding what's going on can help reduce your worries.

 Coronary heart disease

The most common heart disease in Scotland is coronary artery disease. This happens when the coronary arteries, the blood vessels of the heart, become narrowed or blocked and cannot supply enough blood to the heart.

It May cause angina and/or heart attack.

 Angina, Chest pain

Angina is pain or discomfort in the chest, arms, neck, stomach, or jaw that occurs when blood flow to the heart is restricted due to the narrowing of the arteries. This blockage is called atheroma. Angina is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of coronary artery disease.

Angina is a heartfelt way of saying you're not getting enough oxygen when you're doing intense things or feeling stressed. Many people learn to understand how much activity is causing their angina attack. This is called stable angina.

 Heart attack

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction or MI, occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is completely cut off. This is usually due to the breakdown of fat residues and the formation of blood clots in the coronary arteries. This may damage the portion of the myocardium supplied by the coronary artery in question.

 Heart failure

When the heart cannot pump effectively, the heart muscle cannot meet the body's need for blood and oxygen, and various symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath develop in the body. This is called heart failure because the heart does not work efficiently.

 Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm)

The heart muscle has an electrical system that helps stimulate the heartbeat. When the heart's electrical signals are cut or interrupted, the heart can beat too fast (tachycardia), beat too slowly (bradycardia), or become irregular. This is called arrhythmia.

 Heart valve disease

Alves open and close to regulate blood flow in the heart. Problems with the valves increase the load on the heart and can strain the heart muscle. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

  •  shortness of breath
  •  ankle swelling
  •  weakness
  •  Chest pain (angina or palpitations)
  •  Vertigo or fainting

High blood pressure

Another condition that can affect the heart is high blood pressure or high blood pressure. While high blood pressure is not a disease per se, it can increase the risk of developing serious conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke.

 Congenital heart disease

Congenital heart disease occurs when an abnormality or defect occurs in the structure of the fetal heart that develops in the womb. A baby can be born with only one defect or more than one. Some types of congenital heart diseases become life-threatening for newborns over time.
