Skirt & Coat Hangers: Hang or Fold?

High-quality garments are an investment, and like any other investment, they should be taken care of if you want to maximize what you can get out of them. For said garments, that means storing them properly to retain their structure for years to come.

However, many people don't think twice about whether a garment should be folded or hung. They just use whatever hangers are available in their closet, like skirt hangers for shirts, causing the tops to bunch up by the shoulders where the clips pinch the fabrics. These people also fold garments that should be hung. But folding causes stubborn creases and wrinkles in some materials, making ironing a hassle. If the fabric is delicate, it can also snag when folded and stored beside garments with embellishments, like sequins.

Of course, it can be confusing to figure out if a garment should be folded or hung, so here are some factors to consider:

1. Weight -

Unless you can find hangers sturdy enough to support heavy garments, it's best to fold them to avoid drooping. If a garment is heavy only in some spots because of bead work, all the weight will pool to those areas when they're hung, causing the garment to become misshapen. Also, if a garment is heavy, it tends to be bulky, so it can be folded and packed in a compression bag.

2. Fabric -

Some fabrics crease and wrinkle easily, so they should be hung and placed beside garments made of similar fabrics. Thin garments are also good to put on hangers because they take up minimal space, allowing you to maximize the capacity of your closet, especially if your closet has more horizontal space than vertical.

3. Type -

Different types of hangers serve different purposes. So if you have a lot of coats, buy coat hangers. If you own many skirts, get skirt hangers. Don't use the wrong type of hanger for a garment; it'll just give you more trouble than it's worth. For example, using a hanger with no built-in grip will make your shirt slide off. In this case, you're better off folding your shirts until you have the proper hangers.

4. Material -

Aside from different types, hangers come in different materials, too, such as wire, plastic, wooden, and padded. Wire hangers have a bad reputation because they snag clothes and don't offer enough support, so use them at your own risk. Plastic hangers are better than wire, but not by much. Though more expensive, wooden and padded hangers are your best bets.
