Mobile users have been on a rise since Apple launched its first-ever smartphone and from that day onwards, mobile has become an everyday part of everyone’s life.

As of July 2019, the total percentage of Smartphone users has increased to 51.19% compared to 45.09% of desktop users.

And this percentage is still increasing…

This shift in the device has increased the web traffic from mobile devices compared to desktop.

According to statistics, 52.2% of website traffic is generated through mobile phones. With such a large number of mobile internet users, it has become quite important for website developers to build a mobile-friendly website that can hold the mobile traffic for a long period of time.

Ask any SEO Freelancer and he will say, “If your site is not mobile-friendly, you are sure to lose a large number of valuable visitors thus hurting your search engine rankings.”

In this article, you will learn the 5 simple steps to make your site mobile-friendly to maximize your traffic and revenue.

Let’s dive right into the topic.

5 Simple Steps to make website mobile friendly

1. Make your site responsive

Responsive web design is basically a design that makes a website responsive to any kind of screen size whether be it’s a desktop, a mobile, and a tablet. That’s why it is called ‘responsive’.

This type of design adapts to any kind of layout of a device and still gives the best user experience.

Having a responsive website boosts the organic reach of your website. A responsive site helps in better ranking in search engines rather than non-responsive websites. If a user is visiting your website from a phone, he/she must not feel different from the time they visited the desktop version of your website.

Want to know if your site is mobile-friendly or not?

There are several tools that can analyze your site and tell you if the site is mobile-friendly or not.

One such tool is itself provided by Google Search Console which is “Mobile-Friendly Test”.

Just enter the URL of your site and see yourself if your site is mobile-friendly or not.

If your site is not responsive, do consider using responsive themes (if you are using WordPress) or develop a responsive site.

2. Pay close attention to your site’s navigation

One of the important things Google looks into a site is its navigation.

In one such article where Google explains the eligibility requirements to get approved for Google AdSense, Google has clearly mentioned that your site’s navigation is very important if you want your site to get monetized.

Easy navigation means that people should not find any difficulty when looking for the information they desire. Some people want to get information as fast as possible. If your site is not cluttered and anyone can find anything whatever they are looking for, then it can help to boost your traffic.

The best way to make your site easily navigable?

Add a search bar on your homepage or in the footer section of your site so whenever needs to find the information quickly, he can easily get what he is looking for.

For example, let’s say someone is looking for an article What is the best way to do SEO for magazine website? Even if he only types “SEO for magazine website”, all the content related to “SEO for magazine website” will appear in front of the user and he will easily get the information he was looking for.

In this way, you can make your site’s content to be found easily by the users.

3. Use fonts which are clear and large enough to be read

A site’s most important part is its content. Hence, if your content is great, you will never expect anyone to bounce off your site because of your content’s small font size.

Reading on a small screen of a phone is much harder than reading on a desktop. If people are unable to read your article clearly, don’t expect that they will hold on to your content for a longer time. There are millions of articles on Google where they can find their required information.

Hence, keep your font size large enough to be read clearly without putting much pressure. The appropriate size of fonts should be around 14px to 15px but do check if it is looking good or not.

4. Check if your site’s loading speed is good or not

One of the reasons why some sites do not get enough traffic is because of the loading speed of their site.

According to research, an average user expects a site to load within 1 second in a desktop and within 3 seconds on mobile. Any more than that and you are good to lose your visitor.

This unexpected bouncing off your site results in lower rankings.

How?

When a user visits your site and if the site is not loading properly, then the user bounces off your site to the search page. Similarly, if a large number of visitors are bouncing off your site, it gives a strong signal to Google that your site is not good or liked by people. Hence, Google will immediately drop your site’s rankings like a stone.

For example, say you have written an article on SEO Expert in India and even if the article is great but doesn’t load properly, visitors will keep bouncing off your page and thus your rankings will dropdown.

To check if your site’s speed is good or not, head over to “PageSpeed Insights”, a tool provided by Google, to check your site’s speed.

Enter your site’s URL and check if your site speed is good or bad.

If your site’s loading speed is not good enough, then try compressing images you are using, use standard fonts to prevent unnecessary loading, remove unnecessary CSS, JavaScript, and HTML.

5. Consider using AMP

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is a web component framework that was developed by Google to provide the best user experience.

The advantage of using AMP is that it doesn’t load any unnecessary CSS or HTML or JavaScript and hence it loads much faster than the normal web page.

In fact, Google only considers those articles in its news feed which uses AMP.

Hence, using an AMP can be a great option.

Overview

Always keep this in mind, that your focused area should be mobile as most traffic is generated through it. If your mobile-friendly site is working fine, then you will gain a large amount of traffic.
