Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia 1 VIII, marking a monumental shift in its flagship strategy by abandoning its traditional continuous optical zoom to prioritize pure image quality.
The phone officially breaks away from Sony’s signature vertical camera strip, moving to a modern square rear camera island.
The Big Camera Evolution
- Unified 48MP Array: The smartphone transitions to a powerful triple 48-megapixel rear camera system.
- Massive Telephoto Upgrade: Sony replaced the older variable zoom setup with a 70mm telephoto camera featuring a massive 1/1.56-inch Exmor RS sensor. This sensor is four times larger and has four times the resolution of its predecessor, radically improving low-light performance.
- Advanced Optics: The system is rounded out by a 48MP primary sensor (1/1.35-inch Exmor T, f/1.9) and a 48MP ultra-wide sensor (16mm, f/2.0).
- RAW Multi-Frame Processing: For the first time, this computation engine operates across all three rear cameras to aggressively limit image noise and maximize dynamic range.
