Modern manufacturing and medicine both frequently use them.

These pioneering applications helped pave the way for more sophisticated speech recognition technologies, which eventually gave rise to Siri and Alexa.

The design of computer languages, theorem proving, and robotics all saw important advancements as a result. However, it also sparked a backlash against exaggerated claims made for the field, and funding was drastically reduced starting in 1974.

In the late 1980s, interest returned after a decade of little advancement. This resurgence was mostly sparked by reports that computers were outperforming people at 'narrow' tasks like playing checkers or chess as well as improvements in computer vision and speech recognition. This time, the focus was on creating machines that could comprehend and learn from actual data with minimal assistance from humans.
