Is distance learning effective, or does it hinder studying?

HARIDHA P265 05-Jan-2023

The chapter's focus will be on the opportunities and difficulties of distance learning in higher education. Since the author has spent a lot of time working directly with students who are enrolled in remote learning programmes, she has become curious about how they handle the difficulties that come with the potential that these programmes offer. Examining the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning is the main goal of this chapter. Higher education distance learning has drawn more and more attention in recent years.

The phrase 'information communication technology' (ICT) will be used throughout this chapter to refer to communication tools like radio, television, mobile phones, computers, and satellite systems. The term 'e-learning' will be used to describe any forms of learning and teaching that utilise ICT.

Positive effects of online learning in higher education

Traditionally, the chapter has argued that continuing to work while taking classes part-time can help students apply their knowledge to the workplace. Effective mobile technology integration will be based on factors relating to people (students and instructors), design (content and technologies), and institutions (policies and strategies).

However, there are additional theories that may be used to explain how online learning could offer unique prospects for higher education. Online teaching has the potential to guide students through a framework that can also result in the desired results while encouraging better practices.

Digital literacies, teamwork, complex communication, and systems-thinking abilities are among the expected components of technological learning in the twenty-first century. Institutions of higher learning are required to provide programmes and tools that support the use of multifaceted skills and talents as well as the use of media and technology as auxiliary systems in higher education in order to be compatible with online learning.

In general, three delivery methods for courses—distance learning (DL), face-to-face (F2F), and hybrid learning (H)—should be used. Higher education online learning can be effective when it adheres to seven good practice criteria.

Distance learning options in higher education

This paragraph discusses the advantages of distance learning for higher education. There are very few opportunities for distant learners to pursue continuing professional development. E-learning, which enables distance learners to continue their education while putting new knowledge and abilities into practice right away, may be able to provide a solution .

As a relatively recent phenomenon, e-Learning refers to the use of electronic media for a variety of learning objectives, from supplemental functions in traditional lecture halls to complete replacement of in-person interactions with online interactions . To properly participate in daily life, which is increasingly mediated by technologies, certain pupils may need to have a strong understanding of digital literacy.

Distance learning in higher education: the good, the terrible, and the ugly

This section makes the case that using ICT effectively can be difficult for some distance-learning students due to network issues. There is growing worry that some distance learning students are suffering disadvantages as a result of numerous issues.

According to a widely-held belief, academics and these institutions globally should be expected to respond to this growing demand by making distance-learning colleges more accountable. Additionally, increasing pressure can lead to the creation of a sophisticated and well-thought-out collection of theory-based models that can be empirically evaluated and utilised in a formative assessment of distant learning.

Higher education's distance learning challenges

The major goal of this part is to help the reader comprehend the difficulties that higher education distance learning faces. Because of technological advancements, the landscape of higher education is changing significantly.

In addition, throughout the past few decades, numerous instructional technologies have made tremendous advancements. In many higher education institutions around the world, technology-enhanced learning is now a standard practice. Another obstacle to distant learning is the expensive information and communication infrastructure and the scarcity of technical knowledge.

Conclusion

E-learning ought to be promoted to lessen the difficulties associated with distance education. Modern technology, quick Internet access, on-demand power, security, routine maintenance, and effective distance learning management can all be added to infrastructure to make it more current.

Universities that offer distance learning ought to have a computer lab with a sufficient number of computers and fast Internet access. The ability to operate electronic equipment and the requisite understanding of the way that information is given should be shared by lecturers and students alike.

In addition to changing the ways that students are taught, technology can also be utilised to enhance traditional education. Last but not least, e-learning needs to be encouraged in remote education because it can enable students to receive education no matter how far they are from a classroom.
