ISRO is set to launch a test vehicle for India’s maiden human space flight mission on Saturday. The TV-D1 flight will demonstrate the safe operation of the Crew Escape System as well as the Crew Module for the Gaganyaan program which is planning to launch Indian astronauts in space by 2025.

On Saturday at 8:00 hours from Sriharikota, India launches an ISRO’s Test Vehicle (TV-D1). The vessel will have the Crew Escape system and the Crew module on board that will have been released at an altitude of seventeen kilometers and safely landed in the Bay of Bengal.

The mission aims to demonstrate the safety of the Crew Escape System and Crew Module for the Gaganyaan human space flight programme, which is expected to take shape in 2025.

The TV-D1 mission is a significant milestone for the Gaganyaan programme. The success of this test flight will pave the way for the remaining qualification tests and unmanned missions leading up to the first Gaganyaan mission with Indian astronauts.

The TV-D1 vehicle is a single-stage liquid rocket that is 34.9 meters tall and has a lift-off weight of 44 tonnes. The Crew Escape System is designed to safely evacuate astronauts in the event of an emergency during launch. The Crew Module is a habitable space for the crew during the mission.

In the first test flight on Saturday, the Crew Module will capture flight data for evaluation of the performance of various systems onboard. The mission data will be used to improve the design and safety of the Gaganyaan human space flight programme.
