Why Apple releases a new iPhone each year, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook
Annually, Apple unveils a new iPhone, and consistently, some express discontent over the perceived lack of significant changes. While Apple does introduce alterations, it raises the question: is the release of a new iPhone every year truly necessary? Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, addressed this question during an interview with Brut, stating, "I believe that having a new iPhone every year is a valuable option for those who desire it."
Cook also emphasized Apple's practice of allowing users to trade in their old phones for new ones. He explained, "We then resell those functioning phones, extending their usage to a different set of users." Furthermore, Cook highlighted that even non-functioning iPhones don't go to waste. He noted, "If an iPhone is no longer operational, we have methods for disassembling it and repurposing the materials to create new iPhones."
Environment and the iPhone
The question arose in the midst of increasing discussions about corporate environmental responsibility. Apple stands out as a company at the forefront of prioritizing environmental consciousness. This is perhaps why the notion of releasing a new iPhone each year raises environmental concerns. Nevertheless, Cook firmly believes that Apple is committed to maximizing the value and sustainability of older iPhones.
Apple has established an ambitious goal to achieve complete carbon neutrality by the year 2030, and it has taken a substantial stride toward realizing this objective. During the 2023 iPhone event, Apple introduced new Apple Watch models, marking them as the initial products to achieve 100% carbon neutrality. Tim Cook expressed that the ultimate aim is to make the iPhone entirely carbon-neutral by 2030 as well.
