The most widespread caching method employs lazy loading through cache-aside (lazy loading) which makes applications check their cache before data retrieval. The application quickly gets data from the cache when it exists (cache hit) else it will get the data from the database store it in the cache before returning the result (cache miss). The caching operation exclusively stores data that users request often but involves delay when new requests emerge and potential data decay from poor update management.
Write-through caching function allows data storage at both cache locations and database locations at the same time. The strategy ensures that both cache and database data remains consistent leading to fewer chances of working with outdated information. The database performance for write operations receives a delay through this method because every update forces an additional cache write. Write-behind (write-back) caching achieves highest write performance by writing to the cache initially before performing asynchronous database synchronization after a period. The performance gain from reduced database writes comes with the risk that data losses may happen if the cache fails before it finishes synchronization.
Read-through caching provides instantaneous data access since the system automatically retrieves data from the database upon requests. The system removes the need for human intervention in cache control yet it adds a delay when many database queries become necessary. Time-to-live (TTL) expiration functions as a data management tool by establishing expiration periods for cached items which results in automatic data removal. The system triggers simultaneous database refreshes for expired entries which results in database spikes.
