treadmill test

 This is a cardiac stress test that measures the heart's ability to withstand the stress of exercise in a controlled environment.

 Why are you doing the treadmill test?

It is mainly used to diagnose coronary artery disease or to determine the prognosis after myocardial infarction (heart attack) or coronary artery circulation (angioplasty or bypass surgery).

 Who should take the exam?

• patients with symptoms suggestive of angina

 After the treadmill test?

After the history is taken and vital signs are checked, the chest electrode is attached and the patient is informed that the machine is gradually increasing in speed and tilting every 3 minutes. It may be desirable to shave the chest for better placement of the electrodes. If the patient feels this way or has chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue, the test can be stopped immediately. Your doctor may also ask you to stop the test if a change is detected on the EKG. Most adults reach their target heart rate in 9 minutes.

 What do positive and negative tests mean?

A positive test means the patient's ECG shows a change in angina (lack of blood to the heart) after workload. This means that the patient has ischemic heart disease.

 Negative results mean that the patient's heart has adequate blood flow, even at moderate or heavy workload, and there are no signs of ischemic heart disease.

 What are the risks of this test?

Angina may worsen, shortness of breath, arrhythmia, or death may occur. The probability of these complications is 1%. The test should be performed in the presence of a physician in an intensive care unit and an existing defibrillator facility.

The sensitivity of the treadmill test is 73-90% and the specificity is 50-74%.
