IB Explained
The International Baccalaureate® was founded in 1968 by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit organization, in Geneva with a mission – “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
In 1968, the first programme offered by the IB, the Diploma Programme, was established. Later on, three more programmes were offered by the IB, thus creating the IB Continuum of International Education.
In the present day, the IB is recognized as one of the premier global curriculums by universities and educational institutions around the world. The standards and practices of the IB have been transforming students in multiple ways thereby making them sensitive to various concerns and responsible for themselves and the world.
The IB Continuum
There are four IB programmes which can be pursued independently or as a combination: Primary Years Programme (PYP; ages 3-12), Middle Years Programme (MYP; ages 11-16), Diploma Programme (DP; ages 16-19), and Career-related Programme (CP; ages 16-19). Rostrum specializes in tutoring and assisting students pursuing the IB MYP and IBDP.
IB Middle Years Programme
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) was introduced by the IB in 1994 for students aged 11 to 16. It is a rigorous and enriching programme that focuses on “learning how to learn.” The students of the MYP undergo a process of intellectual development that helps them build a unique skill set. They gain knowledge as well as an understanding of the context. At the end of the programme students are prepared to face challenges and take advantage of opportunities presented to them. The IB MYP is conducted by schools in two, three or four year formats. It lays the foundation for the IB Diploma Programme.
IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) was introduced by the IB in 1968 for students aged 16 to 19. It is a two-year pre-university programme that is well recognized and valued by the world’s leading universities. The structure and elements of the programme are designed to ensure that the students achieve all-round development and have a strong foundation upon which they can build their future. Students are equipped with in-depth knowledge of subjects and skills necessary in academic and professional pursuits. After the completion of the programme, students are empowered to explore opportunities and achieve success at university and in the journey beyond.
IBDP Curriculum
Students seeking the IB Diploma must take end of the programme written examinations, complete assessments and satisfy the requirements of the three core elements.
The IB Diploma Programme consists of six subject groups:
Language Acquisition
Language and Literature
Individuals and Societies
Sciences
Mathematics
The Arts
There are various courses within each subject group. Students must choose one course from each of the six subject groups. However, students may choose to study an additional individual and societies, sciences or mathematics course, instead of a course in the arts. The elected courses may be taken at a higher level (HL) or a standard level (SL). Students must take at least three (but not more than four) courses at HL and the remaining at SL. Taking courses at different levels allows students to broaden their horizons. HL and SL courses differ in scope and grading.
A student’s achievement of course objectives is demonstrated by both internal and external assessments. The internal assessments (IAs) for each course differ. They have to be completed by the students according to the given criteria, with the assistance of the supervisor. At the end of the two-year programme, students must take written examinations (external assessments) either in May or November.
