Reasons for Using a Content Management System

Harry Ramos1222 11-Jun-2019

Over the past few years, the web development landscape has seen an increased emergence of new technologies. The most prominent of these has been the rise of Content Management Systems or CMS for short. A CMS is a pre-built framework or collection of code blocks that make building and maintaining a site easier. Web development can be a very complex task. Thanks to the huge number of programming technologies, and more being added with time, it becomes difficult to decide which one to use, let alone building a site.

Due to these complexities, bright minds came up with the idea of providing a collection of tools that can easily be integrated and installed to set up a fully working website seamlessly. Using a CMS provides a host of benefits to individuals and businesses of all kinds looking to set up an online presence. There are currently three major CMSs that dominate the market: WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.

These CMS make it possible for a law student with no experience in web programming to set up a best essay writing service website. A task that would have traditionally required a considerable amount of money for hiring an external source.

No Prior Web Programming Experience Required

Building a simple site by utilising a CMS is a very straight-forward process. In fact, there isn’t even a need for any prior web development experience. Almost all CMSs provide a simple drag and drop option to get a site up and running. However, it is wrong to say that people who aren’t familiar with web technology can set up a site using CMS. Now the process is made so much easier that there is no reason to spend hours at the keyboard in the hope of getting a website up and running.
However, once the website is set up through a CMS, it’s a lot easier to update content on it. At its core, a CMS, much like its name implies is a “Content Management System”.

That means people with absolutely no knowledge of programming can make use of this simple drag and drop mechanics of a CMS to add, edit or remove content. Many of these CMS also includes a built-in content editor like Microsoft Word to integrate familiarity for everyone further.

Easy Collaboration and Access

When there’s a team of several people working on a single website, it’s necessary to have proper control attributed to each individual. Not everyone can be handed complete access to a website, lest there is any mishap endangering the entire site. All CMSs cater to this need by providing simple user access controls. Assigning roles to different profiles with micromanaged permissions is possible within each CMS. This makes the entire workflow easier. It also helps in monitoring activities from anywhere, thanks to the ability to login to the backend of a website via mobile, tablet or laptop.

Since CMSs store all data in one central place, collaboration within a team is also simplified. Files do not need to be sent to each individual separately. Most CMSs also offer built-in revisions functionality as well, letting supervisors see all revisions as and when they take place.

Better SEO and Rankings

SEO is important for all websites. SEO basically stands for search engine optimisation. It is a practice which allows websites to rank higher in search engines. Since a search engine is now like the main point of access for many people, ranking high is important for increased exposure.

CMSs are a huge help in this regard as all major ones come with SEO tools pre-built in them. Additionally, there’s a huge number of plugins on offer for further optimising one’s SEO strategy. Many of the menial tasks required during performing SEO for a custom-built website are now negated thanks to plugins offered by CMSs.

SEO is a constantly evolving discipline due to changes implemented regularly by search engines like Google. Implementing these changes manually can quickly become a headache. Content management systems make this more accessible thanks to their plugins, which constantly update according to new policies. All a user of a CMS has to do is update the plugin to stay updated with all changes.

Security

In the world of the Internet, security is a constant threat. Hackers are an ever-present element of the World Wide Web. Guarding against hackers is just as important as guarding one’s home against thieves. Websites that contain personal data are especially vulnerable to attacks.

This is where CMSs can provide a considerable boost to a website’s security. Many of the CMSs contain basic security measures. But thanks to additional security plugins available for all of them, setting up a secure fortress around a website is made easier.

Mobile First

Thanks to the rise of mobile computing and smartphones, the need to cater to this market has become a necessity. Earlier, websites had to be designed for desktops only, since that’s where everyone used to surf the internet. But the emergence of smartphones changed all that. Now, there was a need to make a website mobile friendly.

By mobile friendly, it meant that websites had to be able to scale to screens of different sizes automatically. In addition to scaling, sites also needed to transform into a layout that was easier to navigate from a small display of a smartphone. Implementing underlying changes meant a lot of work to be done on each individual webpage.

However, all major CMSs are now built with a mobile-first mindset. This means that all websites created through a CMS work perfectly on different mobile phones. Since there isn’t any additional coding needed to be done, it saves a lot of time. It also means that people who aren’t familiar with web development have the ability to create a website that is pleasing to look at and use no matter what the screen size is.
