You may be asking yourself if you need to take vitamin B12 because you are scared of being deficient. Maybe you question if your body has enough B12. This article will tell you all about vitamin B12; the importance it has for our body, where we get it from and if we need to take shots and if there are alternative methods of taking it.

Importance of Vitamin B12 in our Body

Vitamin B12 is very important because it keeps our nerves and red blood cells healthy. It greatly supports our brain function and neurological health. We need healthy red blood cells so that oxygen can be transported to our brain and around our body. It also helps the body to function properly because it helps form our DNA which contains the genetic code for more cell reproduction. Vitamin B12 also prevents Anemia. Anemia is a complication wherein our body has low levels of red blood cells which causes us to feel weak, tired and lethargic. Lastly, it is a co-factor in over 100 crucial enzyme reactions in the body. It means that it helps in the reaction that converts homocysteine into methionine which is an important amino acid.

Vitamin B12 Deficiencies

Vitamin B12 varies from age group, ethnicity and dietary habits. Some people with the age below 60 can have deficiencies, also with people above 60. Also, ethnicity plays a part with deficiency. Latin Americans have 40% population with vitamin B12 deficiency. While Indians have 70% adult population that have deficiency.

Dietary habits are also a key factor in nutrient levels. Vitamin B12 deficiency is more common to people who practice a vegetarian or vegan diet because vitamin B12 sources are mainly in meat, eggs and dairy products. Also, the deficiency rate is also higher in people who take medications that alter stomach acid consumption.

How to Take Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 can be consumed in food like meat, eggs and dairy products. There are also supplements and vitamin B12 injections. If you regularly eat meat, eggs and dairy, your vitamin B12 is enough. However, if you are vegetarian or vegan, your vitamin B12 levels may be low. You will need to take vitamin B12 supplements daily or shots. There are topical patches also available that can be easily applied on the skin and will be absorbed through the skin for an easier and hassle free way of getting you vitamin B12.
