How To Soundproof A Room Cheaply

A soundproof studio isn’t a necessity when it comes to recording, but it sure does help you get the most authentic sounds from your musical instruments. If your room isn’t soundproofed, it can alter your vocals or how your instruments sound. You probably don’t want to record unwanted noises such as echoes of your musical instruments or noises coming through your windows/door gaps. So you will need to sound insulate windows using curtains, doors using door sweep and walls using acoustic panels
While soundproofing is good, it’s not always doable. This is because, a simple kit of Auralex- a sound deadening material can cost you approximately $500- expensive noise proofing right? But did you know that there are other cheaper ways and materials to sound deaden your recording room?
Anyone who’s done soundproofing before will tell you that doors and windows are the major culprits to the noise problems.
The reason?
Sound can easily pass through the gaps in your door. One of the simplest ways to prevent noise leaking in or out of your room is by using a door sweep. You can get it for cheap, and it’ll stop sound from intruding or escaping from beneath the door.
For gaps in the windows, lighting fixture or doors, you can use a cheap acoustic sealant to prevent the noise problem. You can also use heavy noise insulating curtains over your windows, and they’ll help prevent sound from escaping.
Additionally, the floor is also a culprit and contributes to sound travel. A concrete or hardwood floor will induce echo and sound travel. Therefore, carpeting your floor will significantly reduce the noise that bounces around in your room.
However, since it can be quite expensive to carpet your entire room, placing some old rugs on the floor will work wonders in reducing the noise problem.
There are different ways you can soundproof the walls in your room. One of the cheapest and simplest ways is by hanging tapestries or moving blankets along your walls.
If you've got a preference regarding the room aesthetic appeal, you can hang some nice looking blankets or quilts to keep the room from losing its aesthetic appeal. You can also use unused mattresses and place them standing against the walls to sound deadening. This works like a charm, but it’s probably an ugly alternative.
Additionally, you can use egg cartons. They are a cheaper option, but the idea of filling a room with egg cartons is not only time consuming but also unappealing. However, if you accurately place a handful of them, you’ll be guaranteed some good results.
In summary, noise proofing your room doesn’t have to be an expensive project. A combination of the above tips will significantly reduce the echo in your studio and hence improve the quality of your recordings.
