In the Indian joint family system, it was likely for youngsters to follow the profession of their parents or work in their family business. However due to many reasons, youngsters are looking for greener pastures that will give them job satisfaction and help them create their brand with handsome paychecks.  Here are a few reasons why career counselling is essential while finding answers to the most important question in life.

Self-assessment important for career planning

Understanding your personality, talents and limitation is the first step towards finding a suitable career path which will ensure happiness. Indeed, career is the most important part of life that builds your social status, impacts your relationship, brings monetary assurance and contributes in your overall well-being.

One of the focal reasons for work related stress is when you are unable to enjoy your work. You can appreciate job roles that are tuned to your intellectual skills and personality traits.

When you love what you do, your work becomes fun and you will not mind spending hours working and improving your skill set. This will not only help you perfect your work but will also aid in gathering trust to climb your ladder of success at a faster pace than your co-workers.

When you know yourself, choosing a career that syncs with who you are, becomes easy. However, this is not easy as it sounds, you need career counselors who will guide you through various scientific tools like career aptitude tests to assess your cognitive skills and behavior patterns. Most career test follow Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which assess according to 16 personality types from scales measuring introverted vs. extroverted, thinking vs. feeling, sensing vs. intuitive and judging vs. perceiving. Based on the result, counselors will give invaluable inputs about your weaknesses and how to work on them.

Psychometric tools are better than a mentor’s advice

Parents are your first mentors; however, they are less observant of your study pattern! While they may know your temperament, they might not be aware of how you plan and make your decisions! Many students choose their high scoring subject as the platform for choosing their career however, what is taught in the school syllabus is the most elementary part. This is one reason many students’ loose interest in their subject of choice as their learning pattern is inadequate for the subject.

The behavior patterns and understanding strategies varies from person to person and these differences set you apart from your peers and siblings giving you a unique identity. While a given career path may click with your sibling, it is not necessary, it may be suitable for you.

The career aptitude test helps you recognize your personality traits and emotional quotients to find job roles where they are in high demand. For example, if you are intuitive and have an eye for details, you may do good as a data analyst, but your high energy and social skills may deter working long hours processing data.
