The Generation of Power Using Hydraulic Power

Hat are hydraulic power packs?

A hydraulic power pack can be understood to be a unit consisting of a motor, a reservoir for the fluid and a hydraulic pump. It generates hydraulic power by the movement of highly pressurized fluid. These packs generate huge amounts of energy and are therefore used to run hydraulic machinery. There are many brands in the market for these hydraulic power packs and one of the leading giants is Bosch, with its Rexroth hydraulics.

What are the components of a hydraulic power pack?

Some of the basic components seen in hydraulic power packs including Rexroth hydraulics are accumulators, motor pumps, tanks, filters, heaters and coolers, and power units, controllers. Accumulators are intended to collect water from the pumps and maintain the pressure of the fluid. Some units have multiple pumps. However, even in such a unit designs only one motor function at a time. The tanks are meant for storage of the fluid from the pipes. The filters in a hydraulic power pack unit are generally fitted atop the tank. Depending on the unit and the use and quantum of power generated a cooler or heater is generally installed behind the filters to regulate the temperature of the unit. The power unit controllers are wired into the unit and contain the switches and power controls including switches, etc.

How does one select the right motor?

Of all the components of a hydraulic power pack, the motor is of significance as it is the component that is responsible for movement which is the basis of power generation. Choosing a motor is therefore given considerable thought. The best hydraulic packs like that from Rexroth hydraulics have the best power capacity, great torque level and speed optimal to the generation of maximum power. The motors are fuelled by diesel or gasoline and now electrically powered motors are also available.

How do hydraulic power packs work?

The basic principle behind the functioning of the Rexroth hydraulics power pack is that power is generated by the circulatory movement of pressurized fluid and this can be used to do mechanical work. The fluid from the tank is pulled to the accumulator by the pumps. The fluid drained into the accumulator begins to build pressure. When this pressure reaches a pre-set threshold pressure, the pumping action begins and the fluid will start getting circulated. This will lead to the generation of power. The coolers and heaters will ensure that the temperature is regulated throughout the entire process of power generation. The pumping action stops when the pressure drops below the threshold value and resumes when the required fluid pressure is built up again. Once this pressure is reached the process repeats once again, generating power.
