Washington, D.C., Aug. 30, 2026 — NASA has successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a next-generation observatory designed to investigate some of the biggest mysteries in the universe. The telescope lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, the telescope is expected to transform the study of dark energy, dark matter, galaxies and planets beyond our solar system. NASA says Roman has a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing it to survey enormous areas of the sky far more quickly.
After launch, Roman will travel to Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, roughly one million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth. From there, it will conduct a planned five-year primary mission, with enough fuel potentially allowing an additional five years of operations.
One of Roman’s major goals is to help scientists understand why the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Its enormous surveys will also help researchers map billions of galaxies and search for exoplanets, providing a new statistical picture of planetary systems throughout the Milky Way.
Roman is designed to complement rather than replace the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. While Webb excels at detailed observations of individual objects and distant galaxies, Roman will provide a much wider view of the cosmos, enabling scientists to study large-scale structures and cosmic evolution.
The launch marks the beginning of a new chapter in NASA’s exploration of the universe. As Roman begins its journey into deep space, scientists expect its observations to generate a vast amount of data and potentially answer — or reshape — fundamental questions about how the universe works.
