“Surprise and Shine” iPhone 18 Event Set for September 9 Under New CEO John Ternus

Apple is preparing for a major leadership and product milestone next month. The company has officially announced its annual iPhone-focused event for September 9, 2026, with the tagline “Surprise and Shine.” The event will be the first major Apple product launch led by incoming CEO John Ternus, who is scheduled to succeed Tim Cook on September 1.

The event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, or 10:30 p.m. IST. Apple is expected to stream the keynote online through its website and Apple TV app.

iPhone 18 Pro Expected to Take Center Stage

Apple is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at the event. Reports suggest the Pro models could receive Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip, potentially manufactured using a 2nm process, along with camera and battery improvements.

However, this year's iPhone strategy could look different from previous launches. Reports indicate that Apple may postpone the standard iPhone 18 and other more affordable models until 2027, putting greater emphasis on its premium lineup during the September event.

Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Could Be the Big Surprise

The biggest potential announcement is Apple's long-rumored first foldable iPhone, reportedly referred to as the iPhone Ultra.

While Apple has not confirmed the device, multiple reports expect the foldable to make its debut at the September event. Its arrival would mark Apple's entry into a smartphone category already occupied by competitors such as Samsung.

The possibility of a foldable iPhone also helps explain Apple's choice of the “Surprise and Shine” tagline. The company has provided few details about what the slogan means, leaving plenty of room for speculation ahead of the keynote.

A New Era for Apple

Beyond the hardware announcements, the September event carries additional significance because it will introduce John Ternus as Apple's new CEO.

Ternus, who has served as Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, is expected to take over from Tim Cook on September 1. That makes the September iPhone keynote his first major opportunity to present Apple's next generation of flagship products as CEO.

For Apple, the timing creates an interesting combination: a leadership transition alongside what could become one of the company's most significant iPhone launches in years.

More Products Could Appear

The iPhone is expected to remain the main attraction, but Apple could also announce new Apple Watch models and other products during the event. Reports have pointed to the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra updates and potentially new smart-home hardware.

Apple may also provide release information for upcoming software updates, including its next-generation operating systems.

Why This Event Matters

Apple's September launch is normally one of the company's most important events of the year. This year's keynote could be particularly important because it combines a new CEO, new premium iPhones and the potential debut of Apple's first foldable smartphone.

The company has officially confirmed the event and its date, but the specific products and features remain unconfirmed until Apple takes the stage. If the foldable iPhone does appear, however, September 9 could become a defining moment for Apple's next chapter.
