Google has just announced a new wave of AI study tools across Google Search and Gemini, aimed at helping students learn rather than simply giving them answers. The announcement was made August 19, 2026.
What’s new
- Interactive learning in Search: Google Search can now generate interactive explanations, visuals and simulations for difficult concepts.
- Practice questions: Students can ask Search to generate practice questions and quizzes tailored to a topic or exam. Google specifically mentions exams including JEE, NEET, GRE, ACT, SAT, AP, LSAT and MCAT.
- Google Lens for studying: You can photograph a worksheet, textbook problem or other study material and get step-by-step help understanding it.
- Study Notebooks: Gemini's notebooks can organize learning materials and turn them into things such as quizzes, flashcards and other study resources.
- Deep Research in Gemini Live: You can initiate research using your voice, let Gemini work on the report, and then discuss the results afterward.
- Student hub: Gemini is getting a centralized student experience for managing research, study materials and academic tasks, including connections with Google Calendar.
The interesting part
Google is clearly moving from “AI that answers homework” → “AI that acts like a tutor.” Instead of immediately producing a final answer, the newer tools emphasize guided explanations, practice and interactive learning. This builds on Google's existing Guided Learning approach in Gemini.
Google is also offering eligible college students one year of Google AI at no charge. In the U.S. that is Google AI Pro; students outside the U.S. are being offered Google AI Plus, with the exact benefits varying by country.
For Indian students in particular, the JEE/NEET support is probably the most notable piece—Google is explicitly positioning Search and Gemini as tools for exam preparation, not just general homework help.
