Apple is reportedly moving closer to launching a new generation of AirPods equipped with tiny cameras, potentially turning its popular wireless earbuds into an always-available artificial intelligence assistant.
The latest evidence comes from Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, which reportedly contains a short demonstration video showing a person wearing what appears to be camera-equipped AirPods while using Siri’s Visual Intelligence features. The video was discovered by MacRumors and reported by 9to5Mac.
Rather than functioning like conventional cameras for taking photos or recording video, the sensors are reportedly designed to give Siri visual information about the wearer’s surroundings. Users could potentially ask Siri questions about objects they are looking at, receive contextual information or create reminders based on what they see.
Reports suggest the cameras could be embedded into the AirPods’ stems, with an indicator light potentially alerting people nearby when visual data is being captured or transmitted. The design is expected to remain broadly similar to the current AirPods Pro, although the stems may be thicker to accommodate the additional hardware.
The project has reportedly gone through several development timelines. Earlier reports pointed to a 2026 release, while a June Bloomberg report said the camera-equipped AirPods could instead arrive in late 2027 alongside Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone and a next-generation foldable iPhone.
More recently, however, reports have suggested that Apple is testing two versions internally, with one model potentially much closer to launch. A report published earlier this month said a version identified as B790 could arrive as early as September 2026, while the higher-end B798 project may remain targeted for 2027.
The reported plans have also faced conflicting claims. A leaker said in July that development of the camera-equipped AirPods Pro had been suspended, although subsequent software evidence and the newly discovered macOS demonstration video suggest that Apple continues to explore the technology.
Privacy and battery life could become major challenges if Apple brings the product to market. Camera-equipped earbuds could raise concerns among people who do not know whether they are being recorded, while fitting cameras, processing hardware and additional sensors into a small earbud could put pressure on battery performance.
For now, Apple has not officially announced camera-equipped AirPods or confirmed a release date. But the appearance of an apparent Visual Intelligence demonstration inside an Apple software release adds another significant clue that the unusual wearable is more than just a long-running rumor.
