Intel's Panther Lake handheld chip

Intel's Panther Lake handheld chip

Intel appears to be preparing a new, lower-cost Panther Lake chip specifically for gaming handhelds, potentially giving budget-friendly portable gaming PCs a new option. The chip has not been officially announced, but a recent leak suggests Intel is exploring a smaller version of its handheld-focused Arc G3 platform.

According to the leak, the processor could feature a 4+0+4+4 configuration — four performance CPU cores, no standard efficiency cores, four low-power efficiency cores and four Xe3 graphics cores. That would make it considerably smaller and less powerful than Intel's existing Arc G3 and G3 Extreme handheld chips, which use 10 and 12 Xe3 graphics cores respectively.

The main goal appears to be lower prices. Intel's current high-end handheld hardware is relatively expensive, so a smaller Panther Lake design could allow manufacturers to build more affordable Windows gaming handhelds and compete more directly with AMD-powered devices.

Intel has already moved more seriously into handheld gaming with its Arc G-Series, which is based on Panther Lake technology and was designed specifically for portable gaming. The company says the platform focuses on power efficiency, graphics performance and features such as XeSS 3 upscaling and frame generation.

If the leaked chip becomes a real product, Intel could be preparing for a two-level handheld strategy: powerful Arc G3 chips for premium devices and a smaller Panther Lake variant for cheaper models.

For gamers, that could mean more competition — and potentially more affordable handheld PCs in the coming months. However, the new chip is still based on leaked information, so its final specifications, performance and pricing remain unknown.
