Apple may expand ‘Ultra’ branding to iPhone, MacBook: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to expand its "Ultra" branding into a new super-premium product tier that sits above its current "Pro" lineup. This strategy, following the success of the Apple Watch Ultra, aims to differentiate cutting-edge hardware from standard flagship models.

Key Rumoured "Ultra" Products

  • iPhone Ultra (Foldable):
    • Design: Expected to be Apple's first foldable smartphone, featuring a book-style design with a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner OLED screen.
    • Branding: Positioned as a standalone flagship, it likely won't be part of the numbered iPhone 18 series.
    • Launch: Targeted for September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, though availability may be limited.
    • Price: Estimates suggest a starting price between $1,500 and $2,000.
  • MacBook Ultra:
    • Features: Anticipated to be the first Mac with a touchscreen and an OLED display. It may also include a Dynamic Island and cellular connectivity.
    • Status: Originally slated for late 2026, the launch may be pushed to early 2027 due to memory supply shortages.
  • Other Potential Additions:
    • AirPods Ultra: High-end earbuds potentially featuring built-in cameras for spatial awareness.
    • iPad Ultra: A larger, possibly foldable tablet identified as a priority for future development.

Strategy Overview

By introducing an "Ultra" tier, Apple can experiment with innovative form factors—like foldables and touch-enabled Macs—at significantly higher price points without redefining what it means to be a "Pro" user. This tiered approach effectively targets niche, high-spending consumers while protecting the stability of the mainstream lineup.
