
PhonePe to Launch UPI App for Feature Phones with P2P and Offline QR Support
With increasing digitisation and globalisation, the use of mobile banking and UPI payments has grown significantly. UPI, which provides a real-time payment system, has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India.
It allows users to transfer money from mobile devices to bank accounts instantly. It has announced the upcoming launch of a UPI-based payment application designed for feature phone users.

It is working to enable transactions without the need for an internet connection. The initiative aims to promote digital inclusion for feature phone users in India. The number of feature phone users in India is currently around 240 million and is projected to grow by 150 million in the next 5 years.
It will support person to person transfers, offline QR code based payments. It will allow a user to receive money from another UPI user on his mobile number having QR code. The solution aims to create complete payment interoperability between feature phones and smartphones in India.
This can be a great option for feature phone users in remote areas. It is expanding its services to a wider demographic and providing digital literacy and online payment facilities to everyone.
This app of UPI 123pay offers voice based payment option that allows users to authenticate and authorize payments through an interactive voice response system.
UPI will be built on NPCI's 123PAY technology.
The service will be built on conversational engagement platform Gupshup's GSPay technology stack.
During the press release, the company announced that it has bought the intellectual property of GSPay technology stack and will now customize it further. It has built PhonePe's UPI solution for feature phones on GSPay. Gupshup launched GSPay in 2023 for SMS based payment experience for its feature phones.
GSPay is designed as per the UPI 123Pay service of National Payments Corporation of India. The company is strategically planning to build its own UPI solution by expanding its technology state.
UPI123Pay is designed to provide your real time UPI solution. It is used to help users with feature phones and limited connectivity without the need of internet service. In this, the user can make transactions by calling the calling system on interactive voice response.
The user can make transactions through application based service. Transactions can be done with the help of miss call based approach and voice based proximity payment system is also included in it.
This will improve the offline transaction process, person-to-person transfers will be faster and the interactive voice response system will make transactions smooth and simple.
