Mozilla has officially brought an end to its popular content saving service, Pocket which will culminate on July 8, 2025. Pocket became known for its clean interface and offline reading feature which allows reading articles and videos to revisit later. The strategy is a part of Mozilla’s shift that sees other product areas and technologies given higher priority.

Mozilla's decision to shut down Pocket comes as the organization continues to shift its business focus toward developing AI and further away from standalone consumer tools. Once regarded as a must have app for readers and researchers everywhere, Pocket had seen its user engagement diminish in recent years, despite a loyal fanbase and even a premium product.

Before the shutdown date, all current users will be able to export their Pocket data, according to Mozilla. However, Pocket knew its documentation wasn’t the best, so it released a detailed data export tool through its official website. And users are being asked to act quickly to try and preserve their saved articles, as all user data will be deleted permanently on 8 July.

Mozilla didn’t fully explain why Pocket would be retired but insiders believe the platform had no place in Mozilla’s long term vision. A broader transformation is signalled as the company has been putting heavy investments in AI based tools and disciplines centered around data privacy. While Pocket has been wildly popular, Mozilla is set to move on without building its function into its future plans.
