ISRO’s Shukrayaan Greenlit: Venus Mission to Study Weather and Atmosphere

It is now official and confirmed that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has got the go-ahead signal for the Shukrayaan mission. This revolutionary Venus exploration initiative will concern understanding the weather, surface, and thick atmosphere of Venus.

Mission Highlights

The Shukrayaan spacecraft is planned to orbit Venus with the help of six scientific instruments or cameras aimed at solving the mystery of this distant planet. Key objectives include:

  • Understanding Venus’s Atmosphere: The mission is to investigate the dense CO2 atmosphere and the clouds of sulphuric acid.
  • Surface Analysis: The hardware on board will investigate the topographical and chemical characteristics of Venus.
  • Weather Dynamics: The spacecraft will study conditions in the atmosphere, relative velocity, and temperature changes.

ISRO scientists have stated that the mission would provide answers to some of the basic questions related to Venus, such as whether the planet ever supported water or, therefore, living beings.

Planned Timeline

Shukrayaan is planned for a late 2020s launch and for a high-energy transfer to decrease travel time to Mars, which is ISRO’s targeted trajectory. The spacecraft is designed to orbit Venus, where complex observations will begin.

Global Collaboration

Foreign collaborators are welcome, ISRO has said while opening the door to foreign vendors who wish to provide scientific instruments for the Mars Orbiter Mission; this mission is global. The potential partners, including NASA and ESA, can improve what the mission is carrying out today.

Why Venus?

Venus is essentially very similar to the Earth in size and chemical makeup; it has earned it the nickname of the Earth’s twin. But it possesses enormous temperature and pressure, making it a rather difficult assignment. Therefore, analyses of the environment of Venus would help in understanding the processes that occurred on terrestrial planets as well as on the Earth.
