Meta is on course of erecting what it plans to become the “largest” global subsea cable system. This elaborate plan is seen as a way of greatly improving internet provision and connectivity speed on several continents, which is a core idea of the tech giant.

What Is the Project About?

The subsea cable network to be constructed in Africa will cover more than 45000 km, thus becoming the longest so far in the world. Stretching across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, the project will see about 3 billion people offered faster and more reliable internet service.

To implement the project, Meta has involved the best telecom giants and other infrastructure solution providers.

Why It Matters

  • Faster Speeds: The network will be beneficial in that it is likely to provide improved data transmission speeds to new and untouched markets.
  • Improved Access: Its goals are among the following; it seeks to make internet connection more affordable than it is currently.
  • Economic Growth: Other possible benefits of improved connection include an increase in accessibility of display and connection technologies that are useful in creating better digital platforms for business and individual activities, thus leading to economic development.

Meta’s Vision

Meta’s head, Mark Zuckerberg, presented the project as one of the most important steps towards building a free and open internet for all.

We are creating infrastructure for what is to come for the world of technology and online interaction,” he added.

Challenges Ahead

It is important to note that, just like any other project, this one comes with different risks, such as geopolitical risks, environmental risks, and regulatory risks. Others have also raised how Meta will contain the tremendous traffic that the network will facilitate, especially when there is still a lot of ambiguity regarding data sharing.

What’s Next?

According to the Meta, the cable should be complete by 2024. When finished, it could transform how half the world connects to the internet, making Meta a social media monopoly and a telecom titan.
