Nixi is giving away.in domain names for free
Currently, the National Internet Exchange of India (Nixi) lets people register free.in domain names. The agreement is part of the celebrations for Republic Day, which began on Thursday.
You can use the .in the domain for email, websites, and other things. Approximately 3 million people use this service at the moment. People can also get a.bharat domain name to reach out to people in their region. You can also select from more than 22 Indian languages from different parts of the country.
As part of the 74th Republic Day celebrations, Nixi announced that people can register free .in domain names until January 29. For the initial three months, domains that are reported during this time will not cost anything.
People can also choose a free, customised email address with 10 GB of space. This deal was made to get people interested in the Digital India movement.
In other news, BharOS, a new mobile operating system, was just released. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), in Madras, is in charge of making it. BharOS is made with privacy and security in mind.
The Indian government is putting money into this project to make a free and open-source operating system.
Its goal is to lessen the market share held by non-Indian operating systems on smartphones sold in India. If BharOS were implemented, it would be a tremendous step forward in fostering an indigenous environment and encouraging the adoption of homegrown technologies.
Currently, only highly secure and confidential institutions are offered access to this operating system. Of note, BharOS has zero preinstalled programmes (NDA). To ensure that only trusted apps have access to their device's sensitive information, users can whitelist them.
JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) was a Section 8 (non-profit) corporation founded by IIT Madras that was responsible for creating BharOS. National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, which is financed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India (NMICPS).
In December 2004, the Indian government allowed public registration of .in domains. Over 3 million people worldwide use .in or .Bharat. Due to its affordability, the .in domain ranks eighth worldwide.
NIXI also offers 22 languages for domain names to assist businesses reach regional audiences.
“To make countrymen to accept Digital India programme especially when India has taken over Presidency of G-20, NIXI took an initiative to build-up Internet Infrastructure in India by empowering individuals with power of domain along with secured and personalised e-mail,” stated NIXI CEO Anil Kumar Jain.
NIXI has done similar promotions before. Last August, NIXI announced its newest special discount for Indian domain registrations, 75 for the first year. The discounted pricing applied is limited to the first year of use for .in domains and.co.in (or another third level) domains, which normally cost.400 and.300, respectively.
Registrar Owl said in January 2022 that India has 5.8 million domains, the sixth most in the world. This includes Indian.com and .in domains.
As of December 2018, the US had over 133 million active domains, leading the world. Germany has 12.9 million domains and China has 18 million. The survey stated that India had 33% fewer active domains than China.
The survey stated that Indian domain names did not “truly represent the penetration of information technology in India, when seen in connection with the number of companies and public institutions.”
Last August, NIXI announced the deployment of new Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across India. These internet exchanges aim to improve local and neighbouring broadband and Internet services. MeitY reported on December 9, 2022, that the NIXI has installed 42 such IXPs in India.
The government wants 75 exchanges by the end of the current financial year to increase internet access.
