Ericssion: 5G Subscriptions to cross 1 Billion by 2022
Swedish telecommunications instrumentation maker, Ericsson has said on Tuesday that it would expect 5G mobile subscriptions worldwide to exceed 1 billion in 2022, especially serving to drive greater adoption in China and North America.
Uncertainties caused due to a weak economy of the world and Russia’s invasion Ukraine. The company in its biennial mobility report has lowered its estimate for 2022 by about 100 million due to such uncertainties that the people are facing worldwide.
Ericsson, which has been competing with China’s Huawei and Finland’s Nokia, is a major supplier of mobile gear, along with 5G.
While 5G subscriptions are widely raised by 70 million to approximately 620 million worldwide during the first quarter of the year, likewise the 4G subscribers have also witnessed a growth by 70 million to approximately 4.9 billion across the whole world. According to the June 2022 Ericsson Mobility Report, it also verifies that 5G is scaling faster than all previous mobile technology generations.
5G, or fifth generation, networks provide a much higher speeds than previous generations, promising to attach machines in a manner that could enable future features such as autonomous driving. Well, as global mobile network data traffic has been doubled in the past two years due to which the customers are immensely increasing.
5G subscriptions are projected to achieve 4.4 billion in 202, where 80 percent of its subscriptions will be coming from the Gulf Corporation Council region.
A report states that the growth of 4G users is anticipated to peak this year and then it would decline as customers will be moving to 5G, for faster experience. Ericsson had earlier expected 4G subscriptions to peak last year.
With 5G subscribers reaching 1 billion this year, it is expected to reach two years ahead 4G, which had achieved 1 billion subscribers in 10 years after its launch.
The report’s executive editor Peter Jonsson had said in an interview that the pressure that they were burdened with by the telecom operators to bring 5G and to drop the handset prices to $120 has helped them for 5G adoption. He even stated that “China has added about 270 million users in 2021 as compared to North America, which added 65 million.”
However, India is in the process of auctioning 5G airwaves, which is anticipated to witness an increase in the subscriber growth from the end of this year.
According to Jonsson in the interview, they are expecting around 30 million 5G customers in India in 2022 and has targeted about 50 million 5G subscribers by 2023.
