European Union wants companies to adopt a common charging port for smartphones, Tablets, and Headphones. EU said in the parliamentary speech, that using different chargers for different devices generates 13,000 tonnes of e-waste every year in the EU.

Highlights

  • The majority of phones sold in the EU are android based
  • All the android phones are powered using USB-C type connectors
  • European Union earlier said they want a single mobile charging port

European Union asked the agency of technology makers of android phones and related devices to provide the same port for charging. The step of the EU for the same charging port took a step forward on Wednesday when an EU panel backed the proposal, paving a way for an assembly vote next month.

Earlier in past, the union also proposed to the technology giant companies to resolve the issue and hoped that phone makers would be able to find a common solution. It proposed draft legislation last year, a world-first, and after they failed to do so.

One committee of the Consumer Protection Committee agreed with the European Parliament’s Internal Market to the commission’s proposals.

Here the Apple iPhones are being charged by a lightning cable while other devices such as Android phones are powered using USB-C connectors. Here it also told the majority of phones sold in the EU are Android-based.

Alex Agius Saliba said in their debate in European Parliament “With half a billion chargers for portable devices shipped in Europe each year, generating 11,000 to 13,000 tonnes of e-waste, a single charger for mobiles phones and small-medium electronic devices would benefit everyone,” He said this while dealing with the matter in the parliament.
