WHY IN NEWS ?
According to reports, Dehli Police has asked Twitter for details on the account that originally tweeted about the 'Bulli Bai' app and has urged them to remove inflammatory content relating to the incident. Police have also asked the GitHub site for information on the developer of the 'Bulli Bai' app. The complaint filed in the Cyber Police station of the South-East district under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (word, gesture, or act designed to insult a woman's modesty) has now been moved to the Delhi Police Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit. The Delhi Police have also requested information from GitHub on the developer of the 'Bulli Bai' app.
The action was conducted when a lady journalist filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station, alleging that her photo was posted on a website to target her. The complainant claimed she wanted a FIR filed right away and a probe started right away against unknown persons who are harassing and insulting Muslim women on social media and the Internet. Based on reports that doctored images of women were put for auction on the GitHub platform's 'Bulli Bai' application, Mumbai Police has also filed a first information report (FIR) against unknown people.
On Sunday, the West Mumbai Cyber Police station filed a complaint against the makers of the 'Bulli Bai' software and the Twitter accounts that promoted it.
