Can an OpenAI Realtime session recover cleanly after a mobile network switch?

Zeynep Kiliç 39 21 Oct 2026

I’m building a mobile voice app with the OpenAI Realtime API and trying to understand what happens when a user moves from Wi-Fi to cellular. The connection may drop briefly, but I’d like the conversation to continue without starting over or replaying audio the user already sent.

Has anyone handled this kind of mobile network switch in a production app? I’m especially curious about what session state can be resumed, how you avoid duplicate responses after reconnecting, and whether the app should treat a dropped connection as a new conversation. Practical experience with Realtime session recovery would be helpful.
