En-caul Birth- Is it a Myth or a Reality

If you are a pregnant mom then you must have heard some weird birth tales from other people. Then again as a new mom-to-be, you have fewer ideas about the delivery and how it will go. In this case, you should gather knowledge on the same, and one of them is en-caul babies.

This type of birth means the baby gets delivered with a cover on its face and over the head. This caul or veil some time s covers the torso as well, and this is the thin membrane of the amniotic sac. This very thing is also referred to as a cowl and it’s really harmless and can be removed easily after birth. There are rare cases where that a non-amniotic tissue gets attached with the veil, and it can leave a scar on the child’s face if it’s not removed carefully. So here, we have covered this topic of en-caul babies for your better understanding.

A variation to look for

In some cases, the baby is born completely within the amniotic sac, and it’s a rare case too. In this scenario, the baby’s body stays inside the bag full of water and it doesn’t burst at the time of labor. To get a good glimpse of it, you can get the same in the news or social media sites. This very thing is a phenomenon and happens only in one out of 80,000 births. On the other hand, caul births happen when the veil only surrounds the head of the baby.

The amniotic sac

This is also known as a bag full of water and it surrounds the fetus, the umbilical cord, and the placenta. The fluid amount increases as the baby gradually grow. Also, this fluid has no history of creating any kind of complication during baby delivery. This very sac protects the baby from the external germs and bacteria and provides soothing support. This also capable of giving the fetus the space to move and breath properly. If you want to know about the scenario in case of multiple babies, then you must know that they share the one sac.

The signs of labor

At the time of labor, you might feel the water leaking out from you and you can get the feel of peeing. It’s a continuous leaking situation, and you can differentiate it from pee by its color. This fluid is clear and can be other shade such as green, and it can signal the distress of the baby. If you try and contract your pelvic muscle, but if your water has broken the amniotic fluid will not stop coming. The sac ruptures several times during giving birth, and when the membrane breaks it trickles past the baby’s head.

The en-caul birth

Now, an en-caul birth happens when the amniotic sac doesn’t rupture or not even before the C-section delivery. There are so many superstitions regarding this type of birth, and to justify the same there are many famous people born with a caul, and they are Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield, Sigmund Freud, Lord Byron, and recently the baby of famous actress Jessica Alba.

Hopefully, here you get enough idea about en-caul birth. What you should not do is to panic after giving birth an en-caul baby.
