There are several classifications for neck and shoulder discomfort. Some people just have neck or shoulder discomfort, while others have pain in both of these places.

Neck Pain: What Causes It?

Neck discomfort has several causes:

  • Anomalies involving the bones or joints
  • Trauma
  • Bad posture
  • Degenerative conditions
  • Tumors
  • Muscle tension

Shoulder Pain: What Causes It?

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint that allows for a wide range of motion. A movable joint is more likely to sustain an injury. Shoulder discomfort can result from any of the following factors:

  • Exhaustion-related strains
  • Tendonitis caused by overuse
  • Unstable shoulder joint
  • Dislocation
  • Fractures of the collarbone or upper arm
  • Shoulder frozen
  • Nerves pinched (also called radiculopathy)

How Is Shoulder and Neck Pain Diagnosed?

Plain X-rays can indicate narrowing of the space between two spinal bones, arthritis-like disorders, tumours, slipped discs, spinal canal constriction, fractures, and spinal column instability.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive treatment that may reveal the fine details of neural (nerve-related) components as well as tendons and ligament disorders.

Myelography/CT scanning is occasionally utilised instead of an MRI scan.

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) are two electrodiagnostic procedures that are occasionally used to assess neck and shoulder discomfort, arm pain, numbness, and tingling.

How Do You Treat Neck and Shoulder Pain?

Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or naproxen are commonly used to treat soft tissue neck and shoulder discomfort (Aleve or Naprosyn). Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and other pain medications may be prescribed. Drugs like muscle relaxers and even antidepressants may be beneficial depending on the source of pain. A local application of wet heat or cold can also be used to relieve pain. Shoulder arthritis is typically treated with local corticosteroid injections. Exercises for neck and shoulder discomfort may be beneficial. Surgical techniques may be required in situations involving nerve roots or the spinal cord. Your doctor can advise you on the best treatment option for you.
