Google to Launch QR-based Login for Gmail, Phasing Out SMS Codes
Google has recently announced that users will soon be able to log in to their Gmail account using QR code instead of the usual SMS numbers. This is set to improve on security, simplify login procedures and do away with the relatively insecure Short Message Service (SMS) based Two Factor Authentication (2FA), to mention but a few. A new system to be incorporated will work by the use of bar code where customers can scan the code on their mobiles and gain access to their accounts more quickly as well as gain security.
Highlights:
- Google is replacing SMS codes with QR-based logins for Gmail.
- The new system enhances security and reduces phishing risks.
- Users can log in by scanning a QR code with their mobile devices.
- The update aims to simplify the authentication process.
- SMS-based 2FA will be gradually phased out.
QR code login system presents a solution to some of the risks that are commonly linked with the use of SMS code such as hacks. Therefore, through conditional branching of URLs toward QR codes, Google complies with effective and secure authentication procedures. Instead of SMS codes, the users will get new types of codes which are faster and can not be intercepted as the previous one, therefore more reliable.
This update is not an isolated event but part of several initiatives that Google has been carrying out in the area of cybersecurity. In contrast, QR codes cannot be easily exploited as easily as using SIM swapping attacks in the case of SMS codes. Another added advantage of the new system is that it can be connected to Google security technologies, meaning most of the company’s user base will have an easy time using it. Besides, it eradicates the use of cell phone networks where sometimes they are slower in delivering the SMS codes.
For users, there will be no difficulties since they will just switch to a different form of serving a website’s content. They will then be able to spot a QR code when they log in, which they can use to scan it through the Google application of their smartphone. This will reduce the time taken in entering codes and also minimize cases of mistakes taking place. Google has since vowed that having adopted the new system, the company will support all the devices enhancing the reach of the gadgets.
