Discord Discontinues Experimental AI Chatbot Clyde

  • Discord is shutting down Clyde, its AI chatbot, at the end of November.
  • The chatbot will no longer be available for use in DMs, Group DMs, or server chats after December 1st.
  • Discord's decision to discontinue Clyde may be due to the chatbot's limited testing and the company's focus on other AI features.

Discord is making the surprising move to discontinue its AI chatbot, Clyde. The experimental chatbot, which was introduced earlier this year, will be shut down at the end of November. This decision comes as Discord continues to explore various AI features and position its platform as a hub for AI developers.

Discord's support note indicates that Clyde will be "deactivated" at the end of the month. After December 1st, users will no longer be able to interact with Clyde in DMs, Group DMs, or server chats. The reason for Clyde's sudden closure remains unclear. It's possible that Discord may reintroduce Clyde in the future as a paid Nitro-only feature. Alternatively, the company may have concluded from its testing period that an integrated AI chatbot is not necessary for its service. Despite the shutdown of Clyde, Discord remains committed to exploring AI capabilities. The company has been experimenting with AI-generated conversation summaries, allowing users to catch up on missed conversations, particularly in servers spanning multiple time zones. Additionally, Discord is actively engaging with AI developers, providing funding and resources to support the creation of AI apps for the platform.

Discord's decision to discontinue Clyde reflects its ongoing exploration and experimentation with AI technologies. While the chatbot's closure may be disappointing to some users, it highlights Discord's dedication to developing AI features that enhance the overall user experience.
