Apple's share of exports rose from 9% in Q2 2022 to almost half in Q2 2023, according to industry executives.
In the March quarter of 2023, India's smartphone exports were over 13 million, but dipped to 12 million in the June quarter.
iPhones made in India
Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017, with the iPhone SE. The company's performance has been boosted by a ramp-up in production by Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron since the second half of 2022, with the production of iPhone 14 and earlier models. This year, Apple's latest-generation iPhones, iPhone 15, are available for sale in India. Foxconn is making them at the company's Sri Perumbudur plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Experts believe this aims to diversify Apple's reliance on China amid geopolitical tensions. Tata group is also expected to start manufacturing iPhones in India by the end of this year or early next year.
