1. Choose a Domain Name

Before buying, decide:

  • Short & easy to remember
  • Avoid numbers and hyphens if possible
  • Prefer keywords related to your business (good for SEO)
  • Check spelling carefully

Example:
yourbrand.com is better than your-brand-123.com

2. Choose the Right Domain Extension (TLD)

Common options:

  • .com – Best and most trusted (recommended)
  • .in – Good for India-based businesses
  • .net / .org – Alternatives if .com is unavailable
  • .tech / .ai / .dev – For tech startups

SEO tip: Extension does NOT affect SEO much, but .com improves trust.

3. Select a Domain Registrar

A registrar is a company that sells domain names.

Popular & trusted registrars:

  • GoDaddy
  • Namecheap
  • Google Domains
  • BigRock (popular in India)
  • Hostinger
  • Bluehost

If you’re also buying hosting, many hosting companies offer free domain for 1 year.

4. Check Domain Availability

On the registrar’s website:

  • Enter your domain name
  • Check availability
  • If unavailable, try:
    • Different extensions
    • Small variations

5. Add Domain to Cart & Select Options

While purchasing:

  1. Choose 1–3 years (longer = better trust signal)
  2. Enable Auto-Renew (recommended)
  3. WHOIS Privacy Protection → Always turn this ON (hides your personal info)

Most registrars provide this free.

6. Make Payment

Complete payment using:

  • Credit/Debit Card
  • UPI / Net Banking (India)
  • PayPal (some registrars)

Typical cost:

  1. .com: ₹700 – ₹1,200/year
  2. .in: ₹400 – ₹800/year

7. Domain Is Yours

After payment:

  • Domain is activated instantly or within a few minutes
  • You’ll receive confirmation email
  • Domain appears in your registrar dashboard

8. Connect Domain to Hosting (Optional)

If you already have hosting:

  • Update Nameservers (provided by hosting company)

Example:

ns1.hostingcompany.com
ns2.hostingcompany.com

If not, you can:

  • Buy hosting later
  • Park the domain temporarily
