Does Claude API usage separate cached input from regular input tokens?

Zeynep Kiliç 60 22 Oct 2026

I’m trying to understand the usage numbers returned by the Claude API when prompt caching is enabled. Does the response distinguish tokens read from cache from tokens counted as new input, and is cache creation reported separately too?

If you’ve compared the usage fields across requests, I’d appreciate an example of how you interpret them for billing or internal usage reports. I’m not asking about cache setup so much as making sense of the numbers afterward.
