I’m doing an initial literature search for a mechanical component, not asking for a patentability opinion. My concern is vocabulary: a recent product description might say “self-adjusting clamp,” while an older patent could describe the same mechanism using very different terms.
Searching the modern phrase in Perplexity gives me a starting point, but how can I tell whether I’m exploring the underlying mechanism rather than repeatedly finding documents that share the same wording?
What I want from the search
- Alternative technical terms, with an explanation of how they relate to the mechanism.
- Relevant patent classification codes that I can verify in a patent database.
- Publication numbers and links to the actual documents, rather than only third-party summaries.
Has anyone used Perplexity for patent terminology expansion and then checked the results through patent classification searches? I’m interested in a repeatable process, especially for older documents and translated abstracts.
I wouldn’t treat an empty result as evidence that no relevant patent exists. The question is whether Perplexity can make the initial search broader without introducing plausible-sounding but unhelpful terminology.
