I’m using Claude to review a report whose introduction uses Roman numerals. The main report then starts again at page 1, so printed page 24 is not the twenty-fourth page in the PDF viewer.
When I ask for a finding “with page numbers,” the references are difficult to check because I can’t always tell which numbering system Claude means. Some appendix pages also have labels such as B-3.
Is there a dependable way to request printed page number citations alongside the one-based PDF page position? Ideally, a reference would look like “printed p. 24; PDF page 39,” with a short supporting quote.
I’m particularly interested in PDF page label mismatches when a report mixes scanned pages and selectable text. Should I supply a page map, or can Claude identify the numbering consistently from the uploaded file? How would you check this before trusting the references in a review?
