When a Perplexity answer cites an article that requires a subscription, I’m not sure what access to assume. The publication’s headline and opening paragraph might be public, while the reporting I actually need is behind the paywall.
Can the source access be checked?
Is there a reliable way to distinguish between Perplexity accessing the full article, using a public excerpt, or finding the same reporting through another accessible source? I don’t want to assume that a citation means it retrieved every paragraph.
For research with paywalled sources, what verification process do you use? Asking Perplexity whether it read the full text seems convenient, but I’m unsure how much confidence to place in that self-report.
I’m not looking for a way around a publisher’s restrictions. I want to know when I need to open an article through my own subscription before relying on details attributed to it.
