Docker is a tool that provides a means for building and running applications in lightweight and portable environments called containers. These containers can execute in a very successive manner in various settings such as developers’ computers, test servers, or production environments.

 

Key Features of Docker:

  • Containers: Docker uses containers to package an application with all that is needed for the application to run (code, libraries, tools, etc.).
  • Portability: There are no concerns as to where containers have to be run since they are compatible with any system that has a copy of Docker installed, and application migrating becomes much easier.
  • Efficiency: Containers are lightweight because they don’t come with their own operating system; they use the existing OS of the host system.
  • Isolation: They do not affect one another because each container is in an individual environment when the applications are running.
