A file system is a method for storing and organizing computer files and data on a storage device, such as a hard drive or SSD. There are several types of file systems used by modern operating systems. Some of the most common types are:

  • FAT (File Allocation Table): FAT is one of the oldest file systems.  It was first introduced by Microsoft in 1981 for use in MS-DOS. The FAT file system uses a table to keep track of which clusters on the disk are used and which are available for storage. It is widely used on removable storage devices such as USB drives, SD cards, and digital cameras.
  • NTFS (New Technology File System): NTFS is a file system developed by Microsoft that was first introduced with Windows NT in 1993. NTFS is a more advanced file system than FAT, with features such as support for larger files, file compression, encryption, and access control. NTFS is the default file system used by modern versions of Windows.
  • HFS+ (Hierarchical File System Plus): HFS+ is the default file system used by Apple's Mac OS X. It was first introduced in 1998 and is an update to the older HFS file system used in earlier versions of Mac OS. HFS+ supports features such as Unicode file names, larger files, and improved file compression.
  • EXT (Extended File System): The EXT file system is a family of file systems used by Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. There are several versions of the EXT file system, including EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4. The EXT file system uses a journaling system to improve file system reliability and includes features such as support for larger files and file permissions.
  • APFS (Apple File System): APFS is the default file system used by Apple's macOS High Sierra and later versions. It is a modern file system designed specifically for use with solid-state drives (SSDs) and other flash storage devices. APFS includes features such as strong encryption, snapshot support, and improved file compression.

Each file system has its own unique features and advantages, and the choice of file system often depends on the specific needs and requirements of the system or device.
