Does a hip replacement in India provide effective results?

In hip replacement surgery, the damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial prosthetic implant with an aim to restore movement and relieve pain. Hip replacement surgery significantly improves the quality of life and 90 % of the people who undergo this surgery have good results. The top orthopedic surgeons in India have a global reputation and vast experience of performing numerous joint replacement surgery. These surgeons have gone through rigorous medical training from premier medical institutions and facilities.

The most common cause of hip replacement surgery is osteoporosis. The hip joint is in the form of a ball-and-socket. The femoral head in the joint is made of top of the femur (thighbone), while the socket is formed by a part of the pelvis called the acetabulum. The ability to rotate the leg in a different direction is due to the movement of the ball (femoral head) in the socket (acetabulum). The cartilage covers the ball and the socket to help them glide over each other smoothly. Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease in which there is a loss of joint cartilage leading to severe pain and restriction of movement.

Hip replacement surgery can also be done for the treatment of damaged hip due to the trauma and accident-related injury. The surgery is recommended when medication and physical therapy are unable to relieve pain and people are unable to perform normal activities like walking and sitting.

After the surgery, the patient is required to follow the instructions and the exercise routine religiously to ensure complete healing and recovery. Gradually, after full rehabilitation, the patient can go back to the normal activities that they were able to do before the hip became painful. Though, activities involving running or contact sports like playing basketball may be too stressful on the artificial joint. But low impact activities like swimming, playing golf, hiking, gardening, etc. can be resumed.

The long term success of the surgery depends on the technique used for the surgery, the health of the hip, level of damage and the implant used. In recent years, technological developments have transformed hip replacement procedures. The introduction of advanced techniques like computer navigation systems and robotics have significantly improved outcomes by increasing the precision and accuracy of the joint replacement surgery. Advanced procedures like Minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery are now being used, which offer advantages like smaller incision, faster recovery, minimal hospital stay, and reduced blood loss. The implant used is usually made of metal (stainless steel or titanium), plastic or ceramic. The durability and life of implants have improved over the years and now the implants have a life span of almost 25 years. The newer design of implant boasts of reduced chances of dislocation and other related complications.
