Acquiring Advanced Education 

Without completing a PhD in philosophy, you’ll have a hard time becoming a fully-fledged neuroscience researcher. Getting your graduate degree will give you access to main investigator roles, faculty appointments, and grant funding, allowing you to run projects independently.

Considering Postdoctoral Career 

Once you complete doctoral studies, you should consider one or several fellowships before taking an independent position. During the postdoctoral period, which often lasts from 2 to 5 years, most researchers go from being an assistant to leading their own projects. 

This is the right time for academics to start writing their first publications and share them with the world in scientific journals. For most researchers, it is an exciting period as they begin attending international conferences, make their first independent discoveries, and improve their grant-writing skills. 

It is worth mentioning that postdoctoral training is one of the biggest structural challenges young researchers face. On top of extensive scientific requirements, you’ll have to learn to live on a moderate paycheck and ask the government for continuous financial assistance. To make matters worse, some timelines for becoming a researcher are getting longer and longer.

This is why many researchers eventually transition to the private sector. Many commercial enterprises will give you unlimited resources, and you’ll even get to pick your own staff. Although you might not have the same liberties when choosing projects, you’ll be handsomely rewarded for your work.  

Becoming an Independent Investigator

As a doctoral-level researcher, you’ll have several career choices in front of you. Most prospective students are laser-focused on faculty positions and getting their own scientific lab and agenda. But to become a member of a university staff, you’ll need a great publication track record, clear research visibility, and the ability to execute projects independently.
