Why do our eyes cramp?

Eye spasms are benign muscle spasms that are uncomfortable but do not cause eyelid pain. It occurs when the small muscles of the eyelids contract naturally. These cramps can affect the upper or lower eyelids and usually go away on their own within minutes or hours.

There are many common harmless causes of eye spasms. These include:

  •  weakness
  •  stress
  •  caffeine
  •  eye strain or irritation
  •  dehydration
  •  special drugs
  •  alcohol
  •  allergy
  •  dry eye
