Three Primary Signs of Defective IVC Filter

Retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are implanted in patients at risk for developing life-threatening blood clots, and when they cannot take blood-thinning medication. It is also used for those who have had recurrent blood clotting problems and fails to survive the blood-thinning medication.

In August 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported how the use of IVC filters has increased dramatically.

The purpose of the inferior vena cava is to transport blood from the lower half of the body to the heart. For patients at risk of blood clots can suffer from pulmonary embolism (PE); retrievable IVC filters are hence chosen as an alternative to anticoagulant medicines.

The FDA issued an official safety communication in May 2014. They advised, once a patient is deemed free from the risk for PE, physicians should “consider removing the filter as soon as protection from pulmonary embolism is no longer needed.”

The FDA’s website has a notice which states the agency has received numerous adverse event reports about the IVC filter complications which include:

Blood clot filter migration
    Filter fracture
    Embolization
    Perforation of the IVC
    Difficulty removing the filter

The FDA is determined that the adverse events might not have occurred if the retrievable IVC filters had been removed sooner.

The pain from embedded filters or perforation is also often asymptomatic. This is because, a filter can pierce all the way through a vein and the person will still have no idea that it has happened.

Some symptoms of being implanted with faulty IVC filter include but not limited to:

Abdominal or Back Pain

Abdominal and back pain is very common, especially if it is linked with particular movements when someone has one of these filters in is a red flag indicator.

Heart Attacks

People coughing up blood, heart attacks, swelling in the heart, or swelling in the legs should also be careful. Any problems like that, that seem cardiovascular in nature, do not delay to contact your health provider.

    Pain in the Legs

Perforation is one possible reason for pain. Blocked filter is difficult to differentiate from the underlying deep vein thrombosis or DVT which is also a possibility with the defective designs.

Diagnosis

Someone experiencing this type of pain must not delay to go to primary care provider. Doctors check on the status of the filter through some sort of diagnostic imaging, such as a CT scan. The subsequent steps are dependent on the result.
