Backpacking Destinations in Australia

Mike Waknar425 24-Jul-2019

Australia has long been one of the most popular countries for travelers to go backpacking and in recent years it has actually become even more popular than ever before with numerous hostels in Melbourne, Sydney & Gold Coast popping up to accommodate the influx. The allure of Australia is very clear, a nation on the ‘other side of the world’ with so much rich heritage and culture, as well as being a country known for its laid back and welcoming demeanor. The sheer size of Australia however can make it tough to decide where to go and what to do, so we have picked out 4 of the very best backpacking destinations to help you narrow down your options.

Adelaide

Adelaide is not like the other big cities in Australia, it is far more quiet and relaxing. Known as the city of churches, due to the high number of beautiful churches scattered throughout the city, it isn’t as boisterous as our other backpacking destinations. However, it provides a coastal setting with beautiful beaches and a well known wine culture. It is also located just a short distance from Kangaroo Island, which provides host to a number of native Australian wildlife including echidnas, goanas, koalas and kangaroos (of course).

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast of Australia is made up of a number of areas including surfer’s paradise, which as the name suggests is closely linked to the beach and opportunities for surfing. However, the area is not only great for those looking to hit the waves, as the beaches are usually alive with swimmers, kayakers and sunbathers. The Gold Coast also is closely located to numerous theme parks with many buses available to take throughout the city and by night the music is cranked up and the clubs open their doors as the party atmosphere stretches into the evening.

Sydney

If you are going to make the trip to Australia then it would be foolish not to visit one of Australia’s most popular cities. Primarily known for its tourist attractions such as the amazing Opera House and the famous Harbor Bridge, it also provides a number of other tourist attractions. While the city itself can be quite packed and pricey, there are still plenty of options for the budget-conscious backpacker including a wide variety of different cuisines, beaches such as Bondi and a number of different nightclubs and bars.

Melbourne

Former most liveable city in the world, for Melbourne backpack culture is a key part of their tourism, and many of the tourist activities available have been provided with this in mind. Melbourne offers a relaxed way of life, but it knows how to party with numerous bars and clubs down various alleys throughout the city with many backpackers loving the rich mix of different cultures and influences on city life here. There is also a cool hipster and art scene here in Melbourne, which can be seen in the incredible graffiti in Hosier Lane as well as the numerous festivals and events throughout the year surrounding food, music and culture. Melbourne is located close to a number of other tourist sites such as Phillip Island where you can see the small fairy penguins and the Mornington Peninsula which has a wide host of beaches and nature trails (for those interested in more of a beachy holiday). As mentioned previously, Melbourne has excellent infrastructure for backpackers and plenty of cheap accommodation to stay in, to make sure you have somewhere to relax after a long day of exploring all Melbourne has to offer.

Where will your trip to Australia take you?
