This can be a very fatal thing for children. The vitamin K vaccine babies can be given the injection in the hospital after they are born. In public hospitals these injections are mostly free of cost but when a kid is born in a private hospital then the parents should immediately ask the doctor to give their baby the injection.

Now, the question is why this vitamin K is vital for the baby. Well, as it is said earlier, it helps the blood to clot. This is very much essential in order to prevent serious bleeding. Babies do not get sufficient amount of vitamin K when they are in their mother’s womb or even when they are breast feeding. And if they have a deficiency in vitamin K, it can lead to a very rare disorder called vitamin K deficiency bleeding. When this happens, this can cause bleeding in the brain which results into brain damage and can also lead to death. It can be prevented if the newborn babies are given some extra amount of vitamin K. When the baby reaches their 6 months of age, then they can build up their own supply within their body.

The easiest way to give vitamin K to a baby is by giving them a vitamin injection. If the injection is given post birth then it will protect the baby for a few months. Again vitamin K can also be given by mouth. There are several oral dosages available but this one is not absorbed as well as when it is injected to the baby. The oral dosage does not even last long as well.

If oral dosage is given to the baby; there are 3 stages of it. The first one is just after birth, the second dosage is at least 3 to 5 days later and the 3rd or the last dosage is in the fourth week when the baby is fully breast fed.

Most of the healthy babies need a dosage of vitamin K. Pre mature babies and very light weight babies should be given smaller dosages but the doctors need to check that if the baby is okay to take oral dosage of vitamin K or not. it is better for babies who are premature or sick to take the vitamin by injection. There are two major reasons for this. One is, it is very difficult to choose small dose of vitamin K orally and it has to be given more than once. So getting an injection is hassle free.

As per doctors, there are no apparent side effects of vitamin K and so, one can easily go for vitamin k vaccines for their babies.
