There is no doubt that the PMP certification is the most popular and the most prestigious certification in the field of project management. It has only grown more popular in recent years as businesses and organizations grow more and more ambitious and launch larger and larger projects.

Due to this rise in popularity that the PMP certification is experiencing, many people have started to become interested in the PMP certification and have started asking the question – “How long does it take to become PMP certified?” This question is also discussed in the PMP certification training course.

The short and simple answer to this question is that “It depends.” We understand, however, that this brief answer will not be sufficient for most people. So in this article, we have attempted to expand upon this short answer and have gone into extensive detail about the PMP certification.

PMP certification experience requirements -

SET A -

  • The candidate should have a 4-year degree from a university or a college. This degree should have been obtained through fair means. Also, the candidate should not have any black marks or blemishes of any kind on his record. His track record should also be completely free from any kind of criminal activity. A PMP certification training course cannot help one with this requirement.

  • 36 months of experience in leading large-scale projects – The candidate must have been the highest commanding officer of all these projects. In other words, he should have been the supreme authority on all matters related to these projects. Also, none of these projects should have ended in failure or disaster and each one of them should have been an absolute success. A PMP certification training course cannot help one with this requirement.

  • 35 hours of contact training in the project management field or a CAPM certification – The candidate should either possess 35 hours of contact training in the field of project management or a full-blown CAPM certification. He can obtain the 35 hours through a PMP certification training course.

SET B -

  • A high school diploma. This diploma should have been obtained through fair means. Also, the candidate should not have any black marks or blemishes of any kind on his record. His track record should also be completely free from any kind of criminal activity. A PMP certification training course cannot help one with this requirement.
  • 60 months of experience in leading large-scale projects. The candidate must have been the highest commanding officer of all these projects. A PMP certification training course cannot help one with this requirement.

So how long does it take to Become PMP Certified?

As one can see from the above list of requirements, the PMP certification requirements are very extensive and hard to fulfill. The experience requirement alone can take 3 to 5 years to fulfill. The matter becomes even more complicated if one doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree or a high school diploma.

Even if one can fulfill all the PMP certification requirements, one still has to consider the rather terrifying prospect of having to take the PMP certification exam. The PMP certification exam is one of the most difficult exams in existence and it has a vast syllabus. It takes a lot more than just taking a PMP certification training course to pass the exam.

So taking all the PMP certification requirements and the time taken to prepare for the PMP certification exam into account, it can take up to a decade to become PMP certified.
